To connect most MIDI keyboards to your iPad, you can use the Apple iPad Camera Connection Kit. This plugs into your dock connector and gives you a USB port, into which you can connect a USB keyboard. Apr 15, 2020 Since the release of the first iOS version of Garageband (the iPad version) Apple has fixed the ability to import work on the iOS versions into the full, desktop Garageband program, and added the. Connect Xr18 To Garageband On Ipad Pro 3

My question: is it indeed possible to connect an electric guitar to an iPad? (I'm skeptical, because there's no audio-in port)

I found an out-of-date response to this question with a link for an answer, but the link is now 'dead.'

Second question: is there some secondary software that can be used to connect a guitar or bass? (just checking…)

BTW, I'm using an older iPad 3 (iOS 9), if that makes any difference.

Thanks in advance for any guidance on this

    Thanks!

Looks like the iPad remote control capability is over network, ethernet or WiFi, so no USB interface needed for that.

But the 18x18 channel USB audio interface would require a USB camera adapter to access that audio data. Since you ask about DAWs, I assume you want that, so the answer is yes, you NEED a USB adapter.

  • Yes, you plug the usb into the cck. I do it with my x32 sometimes, same procedure as the xr18.

  • @uncledave and @mrufino1 Thanks so much.

I assumed that if you connect over wifi (studio use only) that would be all I'd need. But in order to send audio from x air app to ios you need CCKit ... ? What I wish to do is be able to record from behringer to ipad app, say Cubasis or AUM.

    Thanks for setting me straight.

The WiFi is for control of the mixer. If you’re going to record to your iPad, I’d suggest getting a cheap android tablet and buying mixing station pro to run your xr18 over WiFi, or use a laptop to run the editor program (or a raspberry pi, it works well on that too from what I understand).

Hi again. Confused - why would I need an android tablet? Can't I send audio into ipad and record there? Or record to my Macbook right from usb?

btw - mine is X18 not the XR18. Thanks!

I think the second tablet, or computer, is to control the mixer while the iPad is busy doing audio capture. It's likely difficult to be recording in CB or AUM, and also running the mixer control app, on the same iPad.

@kinkujin - @uncledave is correct. If you’re recording to your MacBook though then you can use your iPad as your control surface. Still, mixing station pro is worth it on iOS too. I love that I can customize all of the items on the control surface that I need. The x-touch works great with these mixers too. Not the compact or the extender though, you need the full x-touch. Or you can hook up other fader surfaces through mixing station pro.

    Lots of possibilities...
    Here’s my x-touch controlling the x32 wirelessly.

X18 and xr18 work the same, I never remember which is which though. X18 is the one that the iPad fits into?

  • @mrufino1@uncledave Ah ok guys, now I understand. That’s more desk space!
So iPad as mixer, MacBook as audio capture to free Studio One program I guess.

Ardour or reaper would also be good choices for DAW. Waveform has a free (full) version as well.

  • Hi again, is there more than on CCK? I went to ebay to check it out and there were so many that I got lost in a sea of connections. One for lightning that is. Thanks.

The Apple USB 3 Lightning Camera adapter is the reference connector for USB uses. It includes a Lightning power port so you can power/charge the iPad while using it. There are many 3rd party clones of varying quality. The risk with them is that an iOS update could invalidate them. There are also multiport/multifunction gadgets that add features, presumably working over USB. They might be useful, but why take a chance if you don't need them. I'd strongly recommend the Apple adapter.

  • If you are going to get a CCK then definitely get the Apple branded CCK adapter. The risk of third party adapters and cables not working at some point is high. I've personally run into that issue with a couple of cables I bought. The extra dollar cost is peace of mind insurance.

    Very wise.

  • I Have the XR18 but I think they are the same software in/out usb configurations.

I Use an Apple CCK3 to connect the the XR18 to the IPad (12.9 iPad Pro 2nd gen) for recording. I use Auria Pro to record up to 16 tracks of audio at once.

I use the built in WiFi to run the XAir app to controller the mixer

So mix and record on same iPad. I’m going to give this a go. If not, mix on iPad then send audio to MacBook. Excited to get this sorted.

  • Yes you can do it on the same iPad.
My set up the mixing is for reference because all the tracks being recorded are “Pre Fader” so anything I do on the mixer does not affect them except the gain staging.
This way I get the raw trackS to manipulate in the daw later.

  • Hi again. Finally got the time to get on this. I’ve got the mixer working, sending audio into AUM. All is well except I don’t know how to monitor my just recorded wav back into to monitor mix. I know it’s something simple but I’m not sustains it.

I did check that the audio recorded by unplugging the cck and listening to iPads speaker. Just can’t seem to send it back to the mixer.

    Any thoughts. Thanks!

When you tap on the output end (bottom) of an AUM lane, do you see the mixer as an option? If you do, the first step will be to configure the routing you want in AUM. Actually, it may be already defaulting to the mixer. Then, check the mixer manual for how to configure monitoring or headphone output from the USB ports.

I just realized you might be trying to get audio from the iPad speakers. When iOS detects a connected audio interface, it becomes the only available audio output device, so you need to use mixer features to hear anything.

  • You have to set one of your channels, or 2 for stereo, to take their input from the usb. At least on the x32 that is the case, but it should be the same. Keep in mind behringer has a strange naming scheme for this, or at least in my mind. The usb input is what goes out to the computer, usb output is what comes back from the computer. In other words, in your routing, you are setting which channel input to the card that then sends out the usb when you record, then set the usb output as what comes into the card from the computer, then goes out the usb card back into the mixer.

If you want to play back multitrack, do it 1:1, or if you’re playing back a stereo mix, assign those outputs in aum (I don’t have aum so I assume you can do that) to 2 channels of the behringer.

There’s probably a YouTube video on how to do it, I know that’s how I have to remind myself how to do it on the x32 when I have to do it, which is rarely.

Thanks guys. No joy so far. I’ve watched every vid I can find but I’ll keep looking.

update - well I’ve gotten some success. On channel 17 (aux) I’ve managed to get mono sound out fromAUM. Though it’s supposed to be l/r I thought. Also though I get sound through the fx channel which is 18 - why I don’t know. I’m sure the routing is still not set up correctly. But wow, This setup is not as easy as I thought it would be from my research.

  • @kinkujin each channel you connect to in the mixer will be a mono source...so, if you're sending stereo you will be feeding to two channels (eg 17 and 18 for one stereo pair) in order to hear one stereo output. In AUM you have the choice of selecting an individual channel or a stereo pair for an output or an input on a channel. This might be where things are getting confused.

  • edited March 15

Thanks @arktek you've given me some more to explore.
1)My original source was mono out into AUM. However, I heard this signal in both ears as a mono 'summed' signal. (Feel free to correct for wrong terminology.)
2)The signal that is returning from mixer to headphones (from AUM) is in left channel only. The meter on xair shows channel 17 (aux) only.
    3) Something funky is going on as I can also get the signal coming into channel 18 (fx) on the xair app.

Thanks again, I will continue experimenting. Should I attach any screenshots?

  • @kinkujin from what I can understand from what you've written....OK, just got back from quick scan of the manual. Ch 17 and 18 are one stereo channel. So, from my understanding of what that means and from my own experience with these things that means that Channel 17 will always be the Left channel and Channel 18 will always be the Right channel. This is why you are only hearing 17 in one ear. You will always only hear channel 17 in one ear. So you need to allocate these two channels as one stereo pair (in AUM that would be 17-18 or what relates to those two channels) if you want to use them to their full capabilities.

Not saying you can't use them as individual ins, but be aware that they are 'half' channels (my terminology) and so will only appear on one side of the stereo spectrum and I think that the two channels will only operate in a pair for aux send and FX send purposes so you'll only have one set of controls for the two channels.
If you want behaviour that is different from this you need to use any of the channels between 1-16 as they are straight up mono channels.

I think this is where your issue is.

  • Hi @arktek Thanks for sticking with me here.

I was following advice from a couple of online tutorials on the x18. They said use channels 17 and 18 for usb sends from ipad. Somehow I have the routing messed up so I'm only getting one channel. Thanks, I'm with you on that.

Can I use 15,16 or 13,14 for that matter? The reason I ask is that 17 is labeled 'aux' in the XAir app and 18 is labeled 'fx'.

Anyhow, I think I have enough to go on and I am making progress. I'm back on it tonight. Thanks for all your help all.

You should see 17+18 (maybe L+R) offered as a stereo output pair in AUM. Not sure exactly how it would be listed, since those choices actually come from the device.

Right. So AUM is sending stereo to 17+18. Your source is only sending a left signal, maybe panned all the way left. I believe AUM would normally send a mono signal to both stereo channels, so it's likely something in your stereo processing.
